There is a great demand for qualified nurses in America, and therefore many people opt this profession. Since there is great demand, the course duration has been reduced so as to release qualified nurses into the filed as soon as possible. Although some people might think that it is not possible to make a nurse in one year, there are others who believe that the course is good. Many have switched from other profession to this profession because of the less time required in taking this degree.

Accelerated nursing program is having duration of 12 months or sometimes 18 to 20 months (Nursing Accelerated Programs, 2008). The course would be highly intense from 8 am in the morning to 4 pm in the evening and after this the students would have to spend 4 to 5 hours daily for study. Because of the same reason, the course could not be taken as a part time program. For those who are financially weak, it is possible to get scholarships, sponsorship or partnerships of some hospitals etc. In order to get admission for the course a student should have a bachelors degree preferably with a science back ground. All the courses taught in the traditional program are taught here also. After the completion of the course the student would get a bachelor of science degree in nursing (BSN) and could write the board exams required for the licensing purpose. He could also appear for NCLEX-RN examinations. Although all the technical skills are taught in the course, the most important thing that is required to become a good nurse is the subtle skills to give care and affection for a patient (Wellington, 2008).

Thus it could be seen that the great demand for nurses in America has resulted in the formation of courses, which are of short duration so that more nurses could be produced in less time. There is great demand for the course and therefore there are many colleges in America, which provide this course. The course taught are same as that of traditional course and therefore the nurse who come out of the course are expected to have same efficiency as the traditional nurse.
