Athletic Training

Western Michigan University (WMU) is a public university established in 1903 by Dwight B. Waldo. When the school first opened, it was known as the Western State Normal School but was renamed Western State Teachers College in 1927 and Western Michigan College of Education in 1941. On February 26, 1957 Governor G. Mennen Williams signed into law a bill making Western Michigan College the state’s fourth public university.

WMU’s main campus is located in Kalamazoo, Michigan, USA. As of the 20082009 school year, the school has an enrollment of 24,818. The school is the fifth largest university in the state of Michigan. The school’s mascot is Buster Bronco, and the school colors are brown and gold.

Mission

Western Michigan University is one of the nation’s top-100 public universities and one of Michigan’s four major research universities. WMU enjoys an international reputation in fields as varied as aviation, graph theory, medieval studies, engineering and jazz studies. Located in Kalamazoo, two and one-half hours equidistant from Detroit and Chicago, WMU offer access to state-of-the-art academic facilities to its over 24,000 students–with nearly 20,000 at the undergraduate level. Students also enjoy Division I athletics, the benefit of more than 300 student organizations and all of the recreational and cultural amenities of a mid-sized college town that is just a short drive from the beaches of Lake Michigan and West Michigan ski slopes.
